the  history  of  Newport  heart


Newport Heart Medical Group
was formed in 1994 when
Dr. Haskell, Dr. Levin and Dr. Gainer merged to form a cardiology specialty group. 
Dr. Levin, in solo practice at that time, joined with Dr. Haskell and Dr. Gainer who had been in practice together at Hoag Hospital since 1992.

The Newport Heart Medical Group
was originally located in the
Lido Medical Building at 361 Hospital Road.

 But, a short time later, 
the group began construction of their
 own medical office building
on the site of what was formerly
the "Mesa Motel".

The Newport Heart office building at
415 Old Newport Blvd., was completed in 1999 and
continues to be the main office building
for Newport Heart.



Over the next few years
several more cardiologists joined the
Newport Heart Medical Group.

Dr. Neala Hunter joined Newport Heart in 1999
and was the first electrophysiologist
in the group.


And then,                                           
Dr. Jeffrey Bruss in 2002 
joined Newport Heart
as an interventionlist for the group.

Dr. Carey O'Bryan joined Newport Heart
in 2005 bringing
Nuclear Medicine expertise 
to the practice.

As the practice continued to grow, there was need for additional office space,
 and so in 2008 some of the Newport Heart services were moved to 455 Old Newport Blvd.

Known as
"Newport Heart North",
this building is located about 100 yards north of the main office.

In 2008, Dr. Michael Panutich
joined the Newport Heart Medical Group.   
Dr. Panutich specializes in Electrophysiology with added expertise in atrial fibrillation ablation procedures.

Dr. Jorge Castellanos joined
the Newport Heart Medical Group in 2014 and brings expertise in a multitude of different interventional procedures including complex coronary interventions,  transcatheter aortic valve replacement ("TAVR") and transcatheter mitral valve repair using the "MitraClip ("TMVR").

Dr. Arturo Dominguez
joined Newport Heart in 2019.
He is certified in interventional cardiology and also has advanced training in performing peripheral vascular interventions.
